In May 2008, close to
70,000 Londoners voted for the British National Party (BNP) in the London
Mayoral Elections, giving the BNP their first seat on the London Assembly
and, with it, the potential to directly influence the way London is run,
and an extra layer to their façade of respectability. The BNP are a party
founded and run as an offshoot from the neo-Nazi National Front. Their
leader, Nick Griffin, is an outspoken Holocaust-denier who has described
Islam as a "wicked and vicious faith", openly blames Muslim
immigrants for the entire country's drug problems, and has twice been
arrested for incitement to racial hatred. If London (arguably) leads the
way, the chances of the BNP achieving decent electoral results in other
parts of the UK suddenly seem uncomfortably healthy.
"I
am well aware that the orthodox opinion is that six million Jews were
gassed and cremated and turned into lampshades. Orthodox opinion also once
held that the world is flat ... I have reached the conclusion that the
'extermination' tale is a mixture of Allied wartime propaganda, extremely
profitable lie, and latter witch-hysteria."
Nick
Griffin, leader of the BNP, writing in 1998
In response to this
madness, R>E>P>E>A>T Records has assembled a 23-track
compilation featuring some of the most exciting new bands in the country
(and one or two old favourites) to raise money and, most importantly,
support for Love Music Hate Racism, an organisation which uses the
positive energy of music to fight back against the racism being pushed by
Nazi organisations like the BNP. KEEP BRITAIN TIDY - A Public Service
Announcement With Guitars will be available on CD from Monday 18th August
by mail order from the R>E>P>E>A>T website -
www.repeatfanzine.co.uk - for a measly £3 (including P&P).
The Keep
Britain Tidy CD includes new music from a host of our favourite bands
including William, We Start Fires, Ten City Nation, Popular Workshop, The
Indelicates, Dexy, Johnny Panic, Bretton, Stagecoach, Subliminal Girls,
Greg McDonald and Nebraska.
City Showcase at the New
Cross Inn 2008
City
Showcase was founded out of
a passionate belief that emerging creative talent both needs and deserves
more opportunities to develop and showcase work. Launched
in 2003, City Showcase is a
not-for-profit company that aims to help tomorrow's talent make it in the
commercial world of today. They work with musicians, performers, designers,
artists, producers, directors, games developers and talented people in all
creative disciplines by providing networking opportunities, workshops,
information and showcasing opportunities.
On Saturday
24th April 2007, as part of the Digital Fusion City Showcase, the Albany Theatre in Deptford played host to some of
Southeast London's finest new talent who all preformed in front of a panel
of respected music industry figures. Earwax Radio went along to record a
very special podcast of the event which you can stream
online by clicking here
(or right click to save as).
We also
caught up with the acts that were selected to play at the Cafe Royal in
London's West End in June - click here
to download the full feature
(or right click to save as).
In 2008 the event moved to
the New Cross Inn and you can watch a mini feature from the event on the
player to the left.
Over the last couple of
years Ibiza has suddenly embraced live music for the first time since the
early 1980's when the likes of Sham 69, Judas Priest and UB40 could be found
onstage at venues such as the legendary Las Dalias. The recent invasion of
guitar-based music has been long over due - the earwax crew remember the
early noughties when the only place you could hear anything close to
alternative music was the painfully naff 'Ground Zero' bar at the foot of
the West End strip. Now, clubs are falling over themselves to promote live
music and alternative DJ's, with 'Ibiza Rocks' taking over as the Islands
biggest brand. When visiting Ibiza in 2007, It did all feel a little bit
contrived with the sight of framed guitars and various clichéd rock imagery
scattered around Bar M with heroine chic podium dancers pulling their best
alternative poses. However, with the rock-hysteria settling down, it looks
like the island is all the better for it, with a more diverse club scene and
finally the chance to get away from a 4x4 beat if you so desire.
To celebrate the diversity
of the island's music scene, check out the Ibiza Rocks promo video below and
a review from the wax-music archives of one of our favourite
nights on the island from back in the early noughties - Tribe of Frog at Las Dalias, the
ultimate alternative clubbing experience that brings together Ibiza hippies,
UV paint, raving aliens and psy-trance. Plus we've got a clip of the perfect sunset from
Cafe Mambo.
